Solar Panel Installation in Nairobi: Roof Mounting, Orientation and Safety
The array is a roofing job as much as an electrical one
Panels sit on your roof for twenty years through Nairobi’s hail and both rainy seasons. More installations fail at the mounting and the roof penetration than at the panel.
Before we quote we look at the roof: sheet gauge and purlin spacing on an iron roof, waterproofing detail on a flat concrete roof, and whether the structure carries the additional load. Where a roof is not suitable we will say so rather than fit to it anyway and leave you with leaks.
Orientation near the equator
Nairobi sits close to the equator at altitude, which is unusually good for solar and also means the received wisdom from elsewhere does not apply. Tilt is shallow and largely about shedding dust and rain rather than chasing the sun. Due-north obsession matters far less here than it does further from the equator, shading matters far more.
A single unshaded array beats a larger array with a water tank or a chimney casting a shadow across one string for two hours a day.
DC side safety
The part of an installation that most often fails inspection is DC isolation. Panels are live whenever there is daylight; there is no switching them off at the source. Correct DC isolators, correctly rated and correctly sited, are what make the array safe to work on and safe for a fire crew to approach.

Cleaning and output
Dust is the main reason a Nairobi array underperforms, particularly in the dry months and near unsurfaced roads. Panels do not need much, rinsing a few times a year is usually enough, but they do need reaching safely, and we will tell you honestly whether yours can be reached without equipment.
