The generator starts but the house stays dark. What is wrong?

The transfer, not the engine. An automatic changeover that has never been load-tested is the commonest failure we find in Runda. The set runs happily on no load and the contactor that should shift the house onto it has quietly failed.

Should I move to solar instead of running a generator?

What is different about plumbing in Runda

Electrical work in Runda

Runda properties are effectively small private estates: their own water, their own standby power, long distribution across an acre, and staff quarters and outbuildings that each need supply. The electrical installation here has more in common with a small commercial site than with a house.

Long armoured runs

The borehole pump is usually the furthest and most important load on the plot. Its supply is a long buried armoured run, and its starter panel sits out at the head, exposed to weather.

That panel is what fails. Contactors pit, overloads drift out of calibration, and the enclosure seal perishes in the sun until water gets in. Owners replace pumps that were never faulty because nobody looked at the panel first.

Standby generation is close to universal here and load testing is close to non-existent. The engine gets run monthly, sounds healthy, and everybody assumes the system works. The transfer switch, which is the part that actually has to operate, has not been exercised under load in years.

We test the transfer with the house on it. It is a different test and it is the only one that proves anything.

Backup that suits the plot

Because an outage here also stops the water, the useful design is an essentials board (pump, gate, lighting, security) rather than whole-property backup. It costs a fraction and covers what actually matters.

Getting equipment in

Runda’s estates require registration a day ahead for anything larger than a service van. We handle it, but it needs planning at quotation rather than on the day the cable is due.
