Why does tracing spurs add to the quote?

Because quoting a rewire without knowing what is actually there is guesswork, and guesswork becomes a variation halfway through. Half a day mapping the installation makes the price you are given the price you pay.

What is different about plumbing in South B and South C

South B's Mariakani and Hazina estates were wired for far less load than modern appliances draw, so the incoming main is the binding constraint rather than the board.
South C plots around Muhoho Avenue commonly still have a rewireable fuse board and no functioning earth electrode at all.
Golden Gate and Balozi estate houses carry decades of undocumented spurs added to the original circuits, which we trace and map before quoting a rewire.

Electrical work in South B and South C

These are Nairobi’s established middle-income estates: built to a consistent standard in the 1970s, and modified continuously ever since. The problems are correspondingly consistent.

A capacity problem, not a fault

The most common complaint here is nuisance tripping when two heavy appliances run together. It is not a fault. It is a supply designed for a household that did not own an electric water heater, an electric cooker, a microwave and an iron.

There are two honest answers: manage the load, or upgrade the supply through KPLC. What we will not do is fit a larger main fuse so the tripping stops, because the cable behind it has not got any bigger.

Boards and earths

Rewireable fuse boards remain widespread across South C, frequently with no working earth electrode at all. That combination means an earth fault has no protection and no path, the two things that between them keep people alive.

Board replacement plus a properly installed and measured electrode is the highest-value work available on most of these properties, and it is not a large job.

Fifty years of additions

Servants’ quarters, extensions, outbuildings, boundary lighting and gate motors have each been spurred off whatever circuit was nearest, and none of it is recorded. We map before we quote, because a rewire priced on assumption ends in a variation and an argument.
