What is different about plumbing in Parklands
- Parklands blocks along Ring Road Parklands were wired with one board per stack, so isolating a single flat is frequently not possible without shutting the line.
- Houses on the numbered Parklands avenues subdivided into flats run several kitchens off an incoming supply rated for one household.
- Highridge buildings near the Parklands shopping centre still have rewireable fuse boards rather than MCBs, with fuse wire usually uprated at some point in the past.
Electrical work in Parklands
Parklands is old, dense and heavily subdivided. Purpose-built blocks from the 1960s and 70s stand beside large houses cut into multiple units, and the electrical installations in both have been extended many times without ever being redesigned.
One board per stack
The older blocks were wired with a single board serving a whole stack of flats. It is a detail that only matters when something fails, and then it matters a great deal, because work in one unit requires shutting power to all of them.
Where we are already in a block with the line off, we fit per-flat isolation as we go. It adds little to that job and removes the disruption from every job afterwards.
Subdivided houses
A substantial house divided into six units carries six kitchens, six water heaters and six sets of appliances on an incoming supply specified for one family. The building is not unsafe because someone did something reckless; it is unsafe because it grew.
The honest answer is usually an upgraded supply and a properly designed distribution, and we would rather quote that than fit a larger main fuse and call it solved.
Fuse boards
Rewireable boards remain common in Highridge and the older Parklands stock. No RCD, and fuse wire that has almost always been uprated at some point. Replacing the board is inexpensive relative to what it protects and is the first thing we recommend on nearly every property here.
