Backup without solar is a legitimate choice
Not everyone wants an array. A great many Nairobi households simply want the lights, the router, the fridge and the gate to keep working through a KPLC outage, and an inverter with a battery does that for far less than a full solar installation. Panels can always be added later if the inverter is specified for it.
The essentials board
The single most useful thing we do on a backup installation is split your circuits. Instead of trying to run the whole house from a battery, we build a small essentials board (lighting, sockets in the rooms that matter, the router, the fridge, the gate motor, the alarm) and back only that.
The battery then lasts hours rather than minutes, and it costs a fraction of what whole-house backup would.
Surge, not just load
The rating that catches people out is surge. A borehole pump or a fridge compressor draws several times its running current for a moment at start-up. An inverter sized to running load will trip every time the pump starts, which looks like a fault and is actually a specification error.
We size for surge as well as steady load, and we ask what you intend to run before quoting.
Batteries, plainly
Lead-acid is cheaper today and, cycled daily, will need replacing in a couple of years. Lithium costs meaningfully more up front and delivers far more usable cycles, so per unit of energy over the life of the bank it is usually cheaper. Which is right depends on how often you actually lose power and how long you keep the house.
