What determines whether the system still works well in three years is the battery chemistry, how deeply it is being cycled, and whether the inverter was sized for the surge your borehole pump draws when it starts.

What a system actually costs
A complete 5kW installation in Kenya typically runs KES 350,000–600,000, and battery choice is the biggest single variable within that. Across sizes, KES 75–90 per watt installed is a useful figure for scaling a rough budget before a survey.
Mounting adds KES 20,000–55,000 depending on the roof. A sloped iron roof is straightforward; a flat concrete roof needs ballasted or penetrating frames and costs more.
Backup, hybrid or off-grid
Backup keeps essential circuits alive through a KPLC outage and is what most Nairobi households actually want. Hybrid additionally offsets daytime consumption and can export or reduce your bill. Off-grid is a different proposition entirely and only makes sense where a KPLC connection is unavailable or years away, which on some new Syokimau and Katani plots it genuinely is.

A cheap lead-acid bank quoted to hit a price point will be dead in two to three years and the replacement costs more than the saving. Lithium costs more up front and less per usable cycle. And no solar system pays back on a household that uses very little grid power in the first place: if that is you, we will say so.
